At a panel discussion at Austin's South by Southwest Festival on Tuesday, Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that photo-sharing app Instagram is all set to introduce non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to the platform in the near term.

However, a tweet by Karissa Bell indicates that the founder of Facebook wasn't very eager to share the details regarding its commencement in the meeting.

The announcement is also supported by a report published Financial Times in January. The report suggested that the two biggest social platforms, Instagram and Facebook, have started to consider allowing their users to produce NFTs and trade them directly through these platforms.

While news by The Daily Beast also confirms the speculation and how it can change the future of the digital world, we still have no details on how exactly it will work. All we know for now is that users will be able to generate their own NFTs on Instagram, a platform with over a billion monthly active users, in the next few months.

While the news is quite exciting for businesses and content creators, we still need more details on whether the NFTs will empower us to sell our top-performing posts as NFTs or if they'd be used as a pass to allow others to check specific posts and stories?

Instagram NFTs Align with Meta's Metaverse Concept

The entry of NFTs to the photo-sharing app is in-line with the parent company, Facebook, or Meta's 'Metaverse' vision. The focus shift was also evident from the change of Facebook's name to "Meta' in October 2021. When Facebook's name was changed, Vishal Shah stated that NFTs would be supported by Meta. Vishal Shah also mentioned that the NFTs would enable people to sell their limited editions of digital objects, display them securely on digital spaces and resell them to other users without any security risks.

What are NFTs?

The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, also gave a statement according to which the company is exploring NFTs for the platform. NFTs are fundamentally the digital assets or collectibles that are generated using blockchain technology. NFTs can be used to represent several things, such as video games, music, movies, and art. These digital assets can be traded online, but all the transactions are recorded on the blockchain.
